The next competitor in the field of portable PC gaming is the Asus ROG Ally. This new handheld PC boasts an AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme Zen 4 APU, a stunning 1080p screen with a refresh rate of 120 Hz, and a price tag that should excite anyone searching for a competitive alternative to the Steam Deck.
The Z1 Extreme-powered ROG Ally, which retails for $699, is just $50 more expensive than the most powerful Steam Deck currently on the market ($649, 512GB model). Crucially, for better or ill, it is also unrestricted by Steam Deck’s Linux-based SteamOS.

The Asus Rog Ally was revealed in two versions, with Ryzen Z1 and Z1 Extreme processors. It is boosted by the Ryzen 7040 Mobile Processor family. Processors are divided into two series (versions): 6 core 12 threads and 8 core 16 threads. The power-adjustable range for both CPUs is 9 watts to 30 watts.

Doom Eternal comes first. For this test, I used 1080p/120hz, High settings with Ultra shadows, and, most importantly, no Dynamic Resolution Scaling (DRS). I went through the first huge combat arena in The Ancient Gods – Part Two DLC’s first level, from the first Armored Baron to the second Doom Hunter.
On the Performance 15w preset, I was able to achieve roughly 51 frames per second (FPS) in the empty region, which plummeted to 33 FPS during battle. Bumping it up to the Turbo 25w preset got me just shy of a consistent 60 FPS, with an average of 58 FPS in fighting.
